5 Ways for Newbie Writers to Niche Down
Everybody talks about how finding a niche as a writer is important, but do they ever stop to consider how difficult it can be and maybe instead of saying “Nah, you can’t do it all, you need to pick a niche” say “let me show you how you can find a niche that you’ll be comfortable with”.
But you know, it’s a lot easier to spot a problem than it is to fix it.
However, that’s not what we’re doing here. here we’re problem fixers so step into my consultancy and let me take you down 5 ways you can niche down as a newbie.
What Is Niche Writing?
I know, I know! You don’t like it when I do the primary school teaching strategy, but common, there might be an actual newbie reading this and apart from what they know as a niche from biology class, they had probably never had to use the word.
So…
Niche writing is the act of choosing or picking a particular field or subject to write and specialize in. It could be business, health, fitness, cooking, lifestyle… name it.
The idea of niche writing is basically to make you as a writer more focused and also make it easier to reach a specific scope of audience.
For instance, here on Medium, I write random stuff, so if you come across this, you might find it interesting and so subscribe to my account, but tomorrow when you get an update in your mail telling you I’ve got a new post, naturally you’ll be expecting it to be similar with this, but because I write randomly here, my new post might be about a movie review, poetry or UX design.
Now, because none of these interests you, you might not find it fun to keep up with me anymore, so I lose a target audience on a particular subject because I wasn’t specializing in it.
You might be wondering why I keep writing random stuff then.
Well, because I have a WordPress blog dedicated to writings on health, fitness, and beauty, generally speaking, well-being. You should check it out.
Hence, Medium is a safe space to relieve myself as a writer, but regarding niching down, my audience are people who are concerned about their well-being and so wish to improve on it.
So I won’t lose an audience who wants to lose weight over an article about the importance of drinking 4L of water daily.

How to Niche Down as A Newbie Writer
Just as promised!
Allow me to introduce you to 5 simple, yet effective ways that can help you niche down as a newbie writer:
- Do Your Research
Starting as a newbie writer, you may not be aware of the existing niches you can write on, but by typing a couple of words on google like “what are some niches I can write on” will expose a lot of options to you.
- Know the Different Writing Styles
Every niche has a style that is peculiar to it. You can’t use an academic writing format to write a business-related article, so after you’ve discovered all the different niches you can, try to know their different writing styles.
- Do it All
Ironic right? However, doing it all, or at least attempting to write on the various niches you’ve discovered in your research is a good way to niche down.
Sometimes, it’s not all about passion, although you can find what you’re passionate about by doing it all, however, it is possible to be passionate about a particular niche, but you’re an expert at writing another niche.
- Consider Your Goals
With all your findings, ask yourself this question; based on your purpose of writing, which of these niches will give you your expected end?
If your sole goal is to monetize your writing, in the cause of your research you can find out the average pay of a writer in such niche, or if your goal is to reach a particular target audience, then your research should let you know the writing format that is suited for them.
- Seek Professional Counsel
You will likely get confused at step 4, so when that happens, be open about getting professional counsel, this will help you weigh your options properly.
Ps, as professional as it may not be, you could also ask for the opinions of your close friends and families.
Takeaway
Now nothing is stopping you from finding a niche you can comfortably write on, pick a niche and get busy.
