BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO EXERCISING
It’s a new month, and like every new month, you’ve resolved to be intentional about your health. You probably made a list like this:
- Go to the gym every 6 days of the week
- Eat once a day
- No soda
- No bread
- No junks
And it goes on and on. Don’t get me wrong, these are great plans, but except this is your very first time wanting to keep fit, then there was a reason you stopped along the line in previous months. One famous reason –you were not seeing the results you hoped for.
I’m going to tell you something, exercise is not a one size fits all program, it’s a gradual process, and you shouldn’t expect results if you just keep jumping into every trend of exercise you watch on insta or YouTube.
So what should you do? You want to lose weight or get fit fast because you want to fit into that wedding dress next month, or you made a bet with a friend that you’ll be fit before next month.
This article isn’t going to show you how to lose 100 pounds or more in a month, like I said, exercise is a gradual process so that is close to impossible. However, if you keep reading, you will learn about how to conduct yourself in exercising so you wouldn’t have to give up along the line this month, rather you’ll choose it as a lifestyle.
WHAT EVERY BEGINNER SHOULD KNOW ABOUT EXERCISING
No one buys a product they know nothing about, same with exercising. It will help if you know what happens in the body while you exercise, as it will help you make the most of your time in the gym, and even create a spark to make you love the idea of exercising.
First of all, you should know that each time you exercise, your muscles not only contract, it also burns fuel from the food you eat, for energy –metabolism. The energy created is what your muscles will use in contracting, giving you that fit and firm physique.
On your first time exercising, you will feel sore during the first 3 days, that’s natural and a good thing also, because that is an indication that your muscles are becoming stronger. And as you continue and become consistent, your endurance, strength, and flexibility levels increase.
A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO EXERCISING
- There Is No ‘One Size Fits All’ Approach to Exercising: Exercising works differently for everybody, so a technique that may work for me, may not work for you. Many factors influence the outcome of exercising, one major factor is your body type. While an endomorph may require a full 1-hour session working out, an ectomorph can lose the same pounds as the endomorph by just working out for 30 minutes. So it is important to find what works for you, learn about your body type, and stick to what works for you. Again, you don’t have to do all the workouts you see on insta or YouTube.
2. Start Easy: This is very important. A lot of people put so much pressure on themselves by giving a deadline on how they wish to look after a while. It is good to have a plan, but it is better to have a realistic plan. There is no “lose 100 pounds in a month” when it comes to exercising, it just won’t happen. When you set these types of goals, you end up beating yourself up when you don’t see the progress you want, and then eventually, you give up. Let it take its course, don’t go too hard, start simple and easy. This way you won’t get too tired, or frustrated. It is normal also if some days you don’t feel like exercising. If you don’t exercise on Tuesday, you could always exercise on Wednesday. Start easy so you can get to the end of it.
3. Create a Fitness Plan: Again, no jumping into random trends you see. Exercise videos should inspire you on what exercises you should stick with for a month or some weeks. Constantly changing your exercise routine will give you little or no result. You need to learn to create your fitness plan and stick to it for at least 3 weeks. If it gets boring, intensify your reps, but don’t just jump into any exercise you see online.
4. Warm-Ups Are as Important as The Workouts: Although this could never be overemphasized, it is underrated. Doing some warm-up exercises before you begin the major workouts is a smart way to work out. There are so many benefits to doing this, not only does it prime you for the day’s routine, it reduces your chances of injury and increases blood flow. If you don’t know what exercises to do for warm-ups, try jogging for 5 minutes, or do some hamstring stretches to loosen up the back of your legs.
5. Diet: The terror that most people fear is in having to give up all their favorite foods. No more ice cream, or cakes. I single-handedly ran a program a month ago to see if it is possible to lose weight while still eating 3 times a day. I don’t know about your body type, but it’s not possible if you are an endomorph. Aside from that, you need to come to accept that while exercises are there to enhance your fit, dieting is there to help you lose weight, don’t confuse the two.
Finally, when you change your perception of exercising, then will you be able to enjoy the result. You may not see progress while you are at it, but when you stop you’ll see you been progressing, you were only blind to it.
