Have “Fun”, Don’t Be A Zombie

Do you know one perk of being a writer?

You tend to listen more than you talk in the world away from your writing pad.

Yesterday, I heard two females, one pregnant, and a guy discussing. The females were graduates who came to do their clearance from the school, while the guy was still a student.

Flashback: In Nigerian universities, there's a student body recognized as the SUG (Student Union Government).

Simply put, it comprises the different political bodies of the school, and every department has its delegates.

Now, every department holds a weekly meeting with its delegates and sometimes non-delegates are allowed to attend. They call the meeting 'Congress'.

Aside from Congress, there are other meetings they have to attend, like the general SUG meetings.

Back to yesterday.

The two females in the conversation were laughing, actually, I'd say mocking, at one of their colleagues.

Apparently, this colleague has a spillover so has to remain in school for another year before he graduates. Also, while a regular student, he was a part of the political body in school, an SUG delegate from his department.

In their mockery, the pregnant female said something along the lines of…well, I couldn't quite pick it cos it was said in Ibibio, the native general language of Akwa Ibomites.

But she did say "You can't serve two masters at the same time. Every time Congress, Congress, when do you want to read?"

When I was in school, I never was political, I never attended a Congress meeting, you know, just as a witness, but honestly, it's not something I'd brag about now.

In school, it was cool in my head that I wasn't "wasting my time" on things like that, but towards my final year, I started realizing how I've missed several opportunities to connect with people.

I wasn't in any society, both in church and school, no social club, I was just a student.

If you're not yet in school and you think this is the way you'd want to be when you finally get admitted, I urge you to change that mindset.

It's trash!

Now you're thinking "We'll, at least I'll do well academically, with no carryovers, and no spillovers".

Wait, did I tell you what the guy said in their conversation?

No? Well, here's what he said, or something like it;

"It's not by that way. Your colleague just didn't know how to balance the whole thing cos Congress is once a week and even with every other meeting he had to attend, if you balance everything well, you'd be fine. My departmental president though he attended all the meetings, came out with a first-class"

"You cannot compare your department with ours. What's your department?" the pregnant female asked.

"Biochemistry".

At that, she lost words. You know why?

We were standing at the Faculty office, Faculty of Science, the departments in the Faculty include Botany & Ecological Studies, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, and Zoology.

I'm guessing they were in Microbiology, not saying it's an easy course, but have you heard of Biochemistry???

That was why she shut up.

So like the guy said, it's all about finding your balance between everything. School, work, and having fun or hanging out with friends.

Don't become a zombie cos you want to achieve success.

Some will say give up the fun to focus on "making it".

Well, it depends on what your definition of fun is. Does it have anything to do with watching movies? Count me in.

I'm not really the social type, and for long that has been fuelled with my belief that I don't need anybody to survive in life, but I know better.

So does fun have anything to do with hanging out with friends or going to events where if I talk right, I might make new friends? Again, count me in.

But does fun have to do with getting wasted on alcohol? Count me out.

Although, this is for health reasons as I don't suffer a hangover long enough not to get on with my day the next day so…

However, all I'm saying is pick something fun to do even while you're hell-bent on achieving success.

Could be playing football, going on a hike, swimming, window shopping, attending a social event…just don't be a zombie.
