Hearts, Bags, and Luggage
Chapter 1: Part 3
***
At six Zara was already seated at the café, waiting anxiously for Naomi’s arrival. Naomi was a tall slender lady, she walked with her nose up in the air, and it was impossible not to notice her. As she walked through the door of the café, in a grey-green trouser suit, her purse hanging on her left wrist and her eyes concealed by a big dark circle sunglass, Zara stood up from the corner of the café where she sat and waved at Naomi.
“Hey, how’re you doing?” Naomi greeted as she made her to the chair across from where Zara sat.
“I’m ok” Zara responded.
The two ladies sat there, looking at each other from across the table between them, Zara anxious to hear what Naomi had to say and Naomi hoping Zara would be fine with the news she was going to be delivering.
“So…” “Zara” they spoke almost at the same time.
“Zara” Naomi repeated, “I don’t know how else to break it to you so maybe it hurts less, but…” she paused and bit her lower lips.
“Naomi, come on, you’re killing me here. what is it?”
“Zara, you know Dave is married yeah?”
“Yeah, and now divorced”.
Naomi shook her head as she ran her hand through her blond wavy hair, making it fall into a mess unto her face. she exhaled loudly and said “Zara, they were never divorced”, she paused to let her take it in.
Zara drew back in her chair and batted her eyes in disbelief, unable to utter any more words other than “What?”
“Ah” Naomi stretched and drew back also “I hate to be the bearer of sad news but…Dave was never divorced. He probably told you that to keep you from asking questions”.
Zara just stared at the flower vase on the table, not knowing what to make of what she’s been told. After a few minutes of silence, she dared to speak.
“So where is he now?” she spoke the words slowly like it hurt each time she opened her mouth.
“Home” Naomi answered, “With his wife, two boys, and…” she took a deep breath “a day-old baby girl”.
“What?” she shivered as a tear ran down her eyes.
“Oh, honey. Here”, Naomi offered her a napkin which she used to dry the tears that fell on her face. she tried to speak some more, there were so many questions she needed answers to, but when she saw her will was not winning over her emotions, she stood up to leave.
“Thanks, Naomi,” she uttered as she left.
“Sure,” Naomi said after her.
