Mommy

Pictorial representation of the poem 'Mommy' by author

I know you’re troubled
The weight is a burden
But you carry it as if unbothered
You cast yourself down
So I may be up there with the rest
Your dreams and reality navigate differently
Yet you refuse to bend to the circumstances
Holding face in life’s smite
And picking me from my dirt
I forget sometimes the scorn you hide for my smile
And make a mess of words to strike you
And alter my pace to evoke your anger
I forget sometimes that you’re human
And flip when you act under the weight you carry
Yet when morning calls you think first
of what to fill my belly with
Your history so far has been one of great lonesome
Your heartbreak is my curse
I try to break it with a kiss on your forehead
Reminding you that I love you
It doesn’t stick long in your memory
I wish it would
Because mum, I love you every minute.
