Nostalgia: A Poem By C. (2024)
Nostalgia :A Poem by C. (2024)

I thought of clay today,
And remembered the things we molded from it
Mortar and pestle for craft
Because they were the easiest to make
I thought of how fun it was to soil our hands
And how our parents beamed proudly as we worked
How we chatted away and compared whose was the best
And how we couldn't wait for the weekend to end
So we could show off our art on broad-way to school

I thought of the elephant grass today
How it takes so much likeness to the lemongrass
That if it were your first time in the field,
You could go home to brewed elephant grass tea
Then I recollected how tough it was to pull them off their roots
When senior Adamu gave us a portion of it to weed during labour
With blunt hoes and cutlasses
How we didn't mind the consequence if we were caught slacking and kept talking
How the sun always shone on those Fridays
And tho we dismissed earlier than 4, we couldn't wait to be home by 2

I thought of you today
How odd it was the last we spoke
As if it was only our first time meeting
And were required to act formally
The pidgin that was our lingua franca burned our tongues
Our minds made it their mission to look out for anything inferior
And conceal it from the other
We struggled for things to talk about tho we had a lot of catching up to do
Even our hug felt weird and when we waved goodbye
We knew we had lost something more than time
